Our Story
Jennifer Locke
Founder and Principal
About Me
Jennifer Locke, the founder of River Rock Law, is a native Edmontonian. She graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta in 2011 and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2012. Prior to law school, Jennifer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction in 2005. She then enjoyed a journey into the oil patch and worked for a couple of drilling companies in Nisku, AB in the personnel departments.
Growing up, Jennifer was active in all kinds of extra-curricular activities, but the one that instilled in her the duty to help others and do her best was Girl Guides. Between her youth years and adult service years, Jennifer earned her 30 year service pin with Girl Guides of Canada in 2020.
Jennifer derives a lot of satisfaction helping clients. Humorous by nature, Jennifer is friendly and down to earth. While some legal concepts can be quite complex, Jennifer strives to translate legal jargon into plain English so her clients can understand their options and how the law works.
Our Passion – Wills and Estates:
Wills and Estates has become Jennifer’s area of passion. Not only because it is an area of law that applies to absolutely everyone, but due to Jennifer’s own personal experience with Wills and Estates Law itself. It is certainly one thing to be a lawyer that is well versed in the law, but it is quite another to experience it firsthand.
During her second year of law school, Jennifer’s mother was diagnosed with early onset dementia. It was then a rush to ensure that her mother had completed an Enduring Power of Attorney and a Personal Directive while her mother was still mentally competent. Then came the hard decision to have her mother declared mentally incompetent and take over making health care decisions for her mother such as moving her to a long term care facility and looking after her finances.
5 years after graduating law school, Jennifer’s father died and she assisted her family with obtaining a Grant of Probate for the estate and working with her family to ensure her father’s estate was properly settled.
Jennifer saw firsthand how these legal documents interact with our health care system and financial institutions. She has sat where you may sit – across from a nurse practitioner discussing the decision to stop all treatments, across from an accountant trying to make heads and tails of tax slips, across from a funeral director selecting an urn, across from a banker going over statements and the steps involved with getting money released and bills paid.
She brings to her practice compassion and understanding for her clients as they navigate an illness or death in the family as well as practical knowledge of challenges they may face as she has gone through the process herself and is here to help.
The Name – River Rock Law:
The name for the firm is inspired by a painting of river rocks by Jennifer’s late mother, Mary Locke. The painting is featured as our website background and the inspiration for our logo.
